The PADI Open Water Diver course is the most popular diver training programme in the world! Thousands of people of all ages around the world join each other in enjoying probably the most exhilarating and rewarding sport there is. The PADI Open Water Diver course is your ticket to a lifetime of intense fun and adventure. With PADI, the dive company that sets the standards in the global diving community, you will be able to dive in the safe knowledge that you have received training from the world’s foremost diver training agency.

As a certified PADI Open Water Diver, the most widely recognised and respected rating in the world, you have the freedom to dive with a buddy independently of a PADI Professional. If you have already tried a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience or are PADI Scuba Diver certified, check with your instructor to see how credit from these courses may apply to the open water programme. Virtually anyone who is in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can earn a PADI Open Water Diver certification. If you know of any health problems, please call to discuss them with a member of staff as you may need to get a medical statement signed by your doctor prior to starting the course.

PADI courses all also recognised by the International Association of Handicapped Divers (IAHD), please see our disability diving section or call to speak to Jim who will be happy to discuss any individual situations. If you are between 10 and 14 or have a child between these ages, there is a PADI Junior Open Water Diver programme available.

What do I need to start?

You need to be 10 years or older, be able to swim and be fit to dive….having a keen thirst for fun and adventure helps a lot too!

(Note: 10-14 year old divers earn a Junior Open Water Diver certification)

How much will it Cost?

Our PADI Open Water course is currently just £350.

This includes all you will need for the course; Equipment hire, Open Water Crew Pak and all your training.

The only additional cost to you is the entrance fee to Stoney Cove National Dive Centre, which is currently £17 per day. This is payable on entrance direct to Stoney Cove Marine Trials Ltd and is part of their registration including Health and Safety site policy. For more information see Stoney Cove.

What will I do?

As you progress through each of the five course modules, you will learn the fundamentals of scuba diving, including dive equipment and skill techniques required in open water.

Knowledge development

Each of the theory sessions require some home study with the manual provided in the PADI Crew Pak. Please come prepared by reading each knowledge development section and completing the review prior to the theory session. Your instructor will take you through each session which is then followed by the pool training session. There is also a DVD available which is part of the Crew Pak so this will enable you to cover all the theory in your home prior to the sessions at the pool.

Home Teach

If you are pushed for time then there is also the possibility of using the manual and the DVD to do all the theory at home in your own time, then all you need to do is attend one theory review session and each of the pool sessions. Please call our staff for more details.

How long will it take?

The normal duration for the course is 7 weeks, 5 weeks for the theory sessions and 2 weekends for the open water dives. However, the PADI Open Water Course is performance based - You proceed as you demonstrate mastery of the course skills on each section. This allows you to work at a pace that is comfortable for you – there is no pressure to finish in a set time. (We can accommodate a variety of schedules and also offer one to one tuition…please ask for details when calling and we can discuss a programme of training to suit your personal needs, including our Home Teach programme.

What will I need?

When you register for the course you will be provided with a PADI Open Water Crew-Pak, or DVD Home Teach pack which contains all the material you will need for the course.

Where can I go from here?

You can continue the adventure with the PADI Adventures in Diving programme; your next step in exploring the underwater world. Please ask more information on the PADI Adventures In Diving programme, or if you wish you can continue your adventure by taking one of several PADI Speciality Courses which we can offer…such as Wreck Diver, Dry Suit Diver, Multilevel Diver, Search and Recovery or Deep Diver…the choice is yours!
